PLASTIQUE ANIMÉE
Jaques-Dalcroze recreated a distinct performing art, where music and movement meld to become one, an art that expresses the human spirit in time, through space and with force. This art is what Jaques-Dalcroze called Plastique Animée.

Five guiding principles govern every Dalcrozian.  These principles are at the core of music study, teaching, and performance.

The performance of the plastique rendering must be artfully crafted and emotionally engaging.  We do this through the movement subjects; breathing, countermovement, energy flow, balance, symmetry, and sensuality.
Sensuality is about pleasing the senses. The artist must work to capture an audience through the human senses because it is the doorway to their emotions.  Sensuality is visceral and for that reason challenging to describe. Nonetheless, creating a performance that evokes a spirit of sensuality is possible.

It may be used in the Dalcroze classroom (eurhythmics and solfège) as a culminating experience after having studied specific music parameters in a piece of music.  It may also be carried forward to the stage and performed in public.  The theatrical performances may be enhanced using special lighting and stage design where levels are used to
highlight certain aspects of the choreography in the style of Adolph Appia. Nonetheless, every effort is provided to ensure that nothing overshadows the prominence of the human body or detracts from either the music or the movement, including costumes, props, and sound effects.

Through the study of plastique, one comes to realize that the entire Dalcroze approach evolves directly out of music literature.  Also, Dalcroze Education is an explicit study in music interpretation and music performance. In its final form, plastique animèe provides evidence that the body is a musical instrument without qualification.
