Level Three Certification
June 28 - July 11, 2020
PROGRAM B
Prerequisite Level Two Certification.
Although the fifth and sixth week of intensive training continues to develop the advanced skills in Eurhythmics, Solfège, Piano Improvisation, Pedagogy, and Plastique, it is primarily designed to prepare the student to qualify for the Jaques-Dalcroze Professional Certificate examinations.
The qualifying examinations include the Pedagogy Practicum Level Three, Solfège, Piano Improvisation, Eurhythmics, and Plastique Animée. Candidates also learn to choreograph for children.
Formal theme papers and written lesson plans are not required to complete the qualification but may be submitted as supporting material.
Professional Certification
Course Descriptions and Outcomes
Eurhythmics
Description
A further development of physical techniques that will allow participants to gain specific physical sensations and link those sensations to particular music parameters. Music subjects include meters of 5, 6, 7, and 8 with the Dalcroze arm beat patterns, changing complex meter, Polly-metrics [5/2, 5/3, 5/4, beat=beat and division=division] Polly-rhythmics, tuplets part two, three times as fast and slow and rhythmic counterpoint.
Outcome
Throughout the examination, the candidate will perform musically and accurately without pauses, uncertainty, or hesitations. In each exercise, the body will remain poised and balanced so that the movement can demonstrate dynamic and agogic nuance, phrasing, metric integrity, and musical accuracy.
Solfège — Professional Certificate
Description
The continuing development of tonality, function, pitch, and interval through specific exercises and songs, duets, and canons. Also covered are all types of triads found in major and minor keys in all inversions, and the first species of seventh chords in root and first inversion. The introduction to the harmonic minor doh-to-doh scales, dyads, trichords, and the harmonic minor tetrachords in the harmonic minor keys of la, mi, si, fa sharp, doh sharp, ré, sol, doh, and fa. Also covered is changing clef using the seven Dalcroze clefs, transposition by way of the clef, and modulation to the relative major. Candidates will work with a partner on all exercises and music literature.
Outcome
Throughout the exam, the candidate will perform musically and accurately without pauses, uncertainty, or hesitations. The candidate will use arm beat patterns with each exercise while the body remains poised and balanced so that the voice can demonstrate dynamic and agogic nuance, and rhythmic accuracy.
Improvisation — Professional Certificate
Description
The development of keyboard musicianship skills for improvising music for teaching eurhythmics in the keys of la, mi, si, fa sharp, doh sharp, ré, sol, doh, and fa harmonic minor. Also covered is anacrusic phrase structure in an A B A form, rhythm realization with modulation of the relative major, melodic harmonization that modulates to the relative major and other nearly related keys using four voices, figured bass realization in four voices using root position, and first and second inversion triads and the first species of seventh chords in root and first inversion.
Outcome
Throughout the exams, the candidate will perform musically and accurately at the piano without pauses, uncertainty, or hesitations. While performing, the candidate will demonstrate metric integrity, rhythmic accuracy, coherent phrase structure, clear articulation, correct use of the damper pedal, and cogent dynamic nuance.
Pedagogy Practicum
Description
The further development of Level II pedagogy but encompassing creating warm-ups and introductions to the lessons, and forming closure experiences such as choreography or plastique animée renderings. Also developed is the concept of watching students and teaching as an active response. The use and development of duets with pitch placement and function numbers and larger piano works.
Outcome
Candidates teach three twenty-minute periods of which two lessons will obtain a pass. Detailed preparation precedes, and constructive critical analysis follows each lesson. Each experience provides an opportunity for on-the-spot feedback and direction. The candidate will teach at least one choreography based on a rote song or short piano piece. Also, the teaching, in general, will include the use of arm beats and the concept of "metric integrity" in either compound or simple meter or both. The lessons will also include the purpose and instruction of the doh-to-doh scales, dyads, trichords, and tetrachords within the context of specific music compositions.
Plastique Animée Practicum
Description
The creating of choreographies based on a rote song for children including choreography notation techniques. Further work to develop analytical methods through movement and rehearsal and practice techniques with a group of children.
Outcome
To fulfill the requirement the student will create one short choreography based on a rote song or small piano piece and teach it as part of the pedagogy practicum. The candidate will also perform in a choreography as directed by a faculty member. Again, the candidate will demonstrate marked improvement in all aspects of movement as an art form. Also, the candidate will further depict the relationship between the music played and the action performed while using live music.
