Five guiding principles govern every Dalcrozian as they teach. These guidelines are at the core of music-making, teaching, teacher-training, and music performance for all disciples. We designed this course precisely so that the student discovers these principals through participation in and then observation of eurhythmics, solfège, and improvisation classes. As the student begins to understand the Approach, the principles are exposed in the writings of Jaques-Dalcroze and then defined, and studied academically.
Students are asked to do independent research and assigned reading to develop more about how they relate to the Approach and how they can bring who they are to the Jaques-Dalcroze classroom. As M. Jaques reminds us, "we cannot teach what we know, we cannot teach what we want; we can only teach who we are."
